Title
HOW TO: Enable uploads on Windows 2000 when no-one is logged on to the server
Problem

On Windows 2000, by default, FileUp runs under the "Interactive user" account. The Interactive user is the current logged on user.

When FileUp is configured to run under the Interactive user account, uploads may fail if no-one is logged on to the server, that is, when there is no Interactive user.

If you recently installed Windows 2000, and are experiencing intermittent upload failures, it may be because no Interactive user is logged on, and therefore, an instance of FileUp cannot be created.

Note: This is not an FileUp or Windows 2000 bug. It is a COM+ configuration issue. No specific error message indicates that you are experiencing this problem.

Solution

Use a specific user account to run FileUp:

  1. Open Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services.
  2. Within the left frame, open
    Console Root/Component Services/Computers/My Computer/COM+ Applications
  3. Right-click FileUp and select Properties
  4. Select the Activation tab
  5. Change the activation type from Library application to Server application
  6. Select the Identity tab
  7. Change the account from Interactive user to "This user:" and browse to select a user
  8. Enter and confirm password and click Ok.
