Removing XFile from Internet Explorer
If XFile was installed on the client through an ActiveX download by the browser, it can be removed from Internet Explorer in the following manner:
Internet Explorer 6:
- Close all instances of Internet Explorer in order to remove XFile from memory.
- Open a new instance of Internet Explorer.
- From the menu go to "Tools > Internet Options".
- On the "General" tab, click "Settings" under the "Temporary Internet Files" section.
- This will open the "Settings" panel. Under the "Temporary Internet Files Folder" section, click "View Objects".
- Select any XFile controls that have been installed (SAXFile FileUpload ActiveX Control, File Manager Class), right-click on it and select "Remove".
- Close the instance of Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 7:
- Close all instances of Internet Explorer in order to remove XFile from memory.
- Open a new instance of Internet Explorer.
- From the menu go to "Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons".
- This will open the "Manage Add-ons" panel. From the "Show" drop-down, select "Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32-bit)".
- Select any XFile controls that are listed (SAXFile FileUpload ActiveX Control, File Manager Class) and click "Delete" on the "Delete ActiveX" section below the panel.
- Close the instance of Internet Explorer.
Unregistering XFile from the system
If XFile does not appear in the Internet Explorer Objects or Add-ons dialog after using XFile in a web page on the client or if the XFile installer was run on the system, then it is possible that the XFile dlls were registered directly with the "RegSrv32.exe" command-line utility. Then the XFile dlls need to be unregistered manually.
Directions for unregistering the XFile dlls manually using RegSrv32.exe can be located at: http://support.softartisans.com/docs/XFile/Webhelp/install_uninstall.htm.
Before proceding with the manual removal, all the open browser windows should be closed to make sure there is no lock on the XFile dlls. These instructions can also be followed for removing the controls even if they were installed via Internet Explorer.
If these dlls were in memory, and you receive any errors about an incomplete uninstallation, it may be necessary to restart the machine before attempting to download and register new dlls.
Note: After removing XFile from the client, if you wish to download a new version of XFile, make sure the CAB file has been updated on the server and browse to the page with your XFile OBJECT tag. If the removal of the previous version of XFile was successful, you will receive the one-time security prompt to install the new ActiveX object of XFile.
