The OfficeWriter Designer toolbar for Word is not available
Problem

After you install OfficeWriter Designer, the toolbar is supposed to be displayed automatically when Word starts. The OfficeWriter toolbar is shown below.

However, in some cases, the toolbar is not displayed when Word starts. Furthermore, normally you can enable or disable the toolbar by selecting View, Toolbars, OfficeWriter in the Word menu. However, there is no OfficeWriter option under the Toolbars menu.

Solution

The OfficeWriter Designer toolbar may not show up in Word if there is another instance of Word running. The most common scenario occurs when Word runs in the context of another application, such as Outlook. In Outlook, you can designate Word as the default editor for email messages. The OfficeWriter Designer toolbar is started by a macro which is automatically executed (to see the macro, select Tools, Macro, Macros in the Word menu). When you compose a message in Outlook, Outlook starts a Word instance which executes the OfficeWriter Designer macro. If you start Word subsequently, the macro is not executed and the toolbar cannot be enabled.

There are two workarounds to this problem:

  1. Start Word before starting Outlook.
  2. Do not use Word as the default email editor for Outlook:
    • Select Tools, Option
    • Select the Mail Format tab
    • Un-check the box for Use Microsoft OfficeWord 2003 to edit e-mail messages
