ImgWriter
Version
1.2.2 and earlier
Title
ImgWriter-generated grayscale GIFs are not optimized to reduce file size.
Problem

Versions 1.2.2 and earlier of ImgWriter do not optimize the file size of grayscale GIF files. This results in a file size roughly equivalent to a 256 color GIF file. The following table shows a comparison of file sizes for the same image converted to grayscale and other color resolutions.

File size comparison of GIF files generated by ImgWriter versions 1.2.2 and earlier

Color Resolution Image Size in bytes
Original File 4696
Grayscale 5407
16 colors 4812
256 colors 5203

Solution

Grayscale GIF files have been optimized for file size in the next* release of ImgWriter. This optimization results in file sizes closer to that of a 16 color file without changing the quality of the image in any way.

File size comparison of GIF files generated by ImgWriter after v1.2.2.

Color Resolution Image Size in bytes
Original File 4696
Grayscale 3121
16 colors 4812
256 colors 5203

* The next release of ImgWriter has not yet been scheduled. Please check ImgWriter's version differences page for the eventual public release of this version and notation of this improvement. If you purchased ImgWriter with annual maintenance or other form of support, it may be possible to release an intermediate build of the "saImageGen.dll" file to you. Please follow your instructions for sumbitting an incident. We can review your case and determine if it is appropriate for you to upgrade to this intermediate build.
